Did you know…
Do tomatoes protect us from the sun?
Don’t want to be as red as a tomato after a sunny day at the beach? Then just eat them! Tomatoes are packed with lycopene – a substance that reduces skin damage caused by UV radiation. Products in which the tomatoes have been processed contain the highest concentration of lycopene. So put the tomato juice, puree and Slurp Soups on the table!
A red pepper contains 4 times as much vitamin C as an orange?
Eat it raw and nice and crunchy so that the vitamins are not lost! Why is vitamin C so important? It gives our immune system a big boost, has an anti-inflammatory effect and ensures that our body absorbs iron better. The latter is especially important for growing kids.
Do you turn orange if you eat too many carrots?
Yes, you read that right, if you’re not careful you’ll turn into a carrot! Carrots owe their cheerful color to the substance beta-carotene. In addition to improving your resistance, vision and bones, beta-carotene also provides an orange glow to your body. This is because our body stores carotene in the fats of the skin. Of course, you only really turn a little orange when you’ve eaten some big ones! Pay particular attention to your palms and the bottoms of your feet. You can quickly see a color difference, especially in small children who eat vegetable snacks with lots of orange-colored vegetables (sweet potato, pumpkin and carrots). No problem! It is not harmful and will simply disappear on its own.
White asparagus squeaking?
This handy trick really makes ‘white gold’ taste even better. You take two white asparagus and rub them together. If you hear a squeaking sound, they are brand new and can go straight into the pan after peeling! The squeaking sound of the asparagus is due to the amount of water in the vegetable. When you just remove white asparagus from the ground, it consists of 97% water. This water exerts pressure, which causes a squeaking sound when it rubs. Asparagus that has been cut a while ago has lost moisture and therefore squeaks less. Are you going to try it at home too? It’s a piece of cake.
Broccoli is good for your memory?
In addition to being a delicious and healthy vegetable, broccoli is also a real brain protector! The vegetable is packed with vitamins, minerals and ‘sulforaphane’. This last important substance in particular has a positive effect on our memory. It ensures that aggressive substances that have penetrated are broken down. Therefore, eat broccoli regularly to slow down diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The same goes for potatoes and radishes!
The potato is the very first vegetable grown in space?
How cool is that? Space Shuttle Columbia was the first to start growing potatoes on board in 1995. Why? Potatoes are nutritionally rich and require little space to grow. The astronauts managed to grow 5 small potatoes during this first flight
Do beetroot make you happier?
The color of beetroot makes us happy, but did you know that beetroot actually makes you happier? Beetroot contains a lot of ‘tryptophan’, an amino acid that ensures the production of ‘serotonin’ or, more simply, our happiness hormone. And did you know that 90% of this happiness hormone is produced in your intestines? If the intestines are happy, you will be too!
Does an outing help with a cold?
Grandmother’s tip! Place a halved, raw onion on your bedside table before going to bed and the stuffy nose will go away. Onions really are a great medicine. In fact, the ancient Greeks already used raw onions to purify the air. When you cut an onion – and undoubtedly cry – a sulphurous substance is released. This loosens mucus and makes it easier to breathe. A warm onion and garlic soup also works wonders!
